Cirrus Logic, a developer of low-power analog and mixed-signal semiconductor solutions, has received a research and development grant from Scottish Enterprise to support the development of a new metrology analog front-end platform for smart energy applications. The project will also expand the company’s advanced engineering activities in Edinburgh, Scotland. The value of the grant was not disclosed. The project is scheduled to continue through 2028 and will support the development of core intellectual property for residential, commercial and industrial energy metering. Intended applications include EV charging, data center DC metrology, energy storage and electrical grid monitoring.
The new analog front-end platform is being developed to provide high-accuracy energy measurements and metrology calculations for smart power meters. The technology is intended to address demand for grid modernization, energy management and decarbonization technologies.
Cirrus Logic will continue to expand responsibility for elements of intellectual property development and advanced feature design within its Edinburgh engineering operation. The project also supports investment in engineering infrastructure, research capabilities and technical talent in Scotland. Edinburgh is home to Cirrus Logic’s European headquarters and its largest engineering operation outside the United States.

As part of the project, Cirrus Logic has expanded its collaboration with the University of Strathclyde’s Institute for Energy and Environment. The collaborative research will contribute to the management of energy by utility and infrastructure providers.

Cirrus Logic and its predecessor, Wolfson Microelectronics, have invested in Scotland for more than 40 years. The Edinburgh operation has grown into a major engineering center where teams contribute throughout the product development lifecycle, from architecture and design through testing and product delivery. The company also works with the universities of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt through its University Engagement program. These activities include engineering scholarships, internships, graduate opportunities, mentoring and collaborative research projects supporting Scotland’s engineering talent pipeline.
Scottish Enterprise is Scotland’s national economic development agency and a non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government. The agency supports companies through targeted investment, innovation and internationalization programs intended to create new market opportunities and contribute to the Scottish economy.
