GlobalFoundries has joined the LOT Network, a global non-profit patent licensing platform that protects its members from litigation by patent assertion entities (PAEs), commonly referred to as “patent trolls.” Semiconductor leader joins the world’s largest patent protection community to shield customers and the ecosystem from patent assertion entities. This move places GF among more than 4,500 companies, including half of the top 20 largest U.S. patent holders, as well as many members of the S&P Global 100 and Fortune 100.
Adding Nearly 10,000 Patents to LOT Network’s Protections
By joining LOT Network, GF has added its portfolio of nearly 10,000 global patent assets in semiconductor manufacturing, test, and design to the community’s collective protections. This membership reflects GF’s commitment to reducing litigation risk while advancing its ability to focus on delivering innovative solutions for critical applications like artificial intelligence, automotive, smart devices, and advanced healthcare technologies.
PAEs account for 87% of all patent litigation in the high-tech industry. These entities typically acquire patents from industry innovators to profit through litigation against other members of the industry. GF’s membership in LOT Network ensures that its intellectual property is safeguarded and shields the company, its customers, and its partners from such risks.
Strengthening the Semiconductor Ecosystem
“Semiconductors are the key building blocks for so many products that the world relies on to live, work and connect. We are committed to protecting our technology and securely manufacturing the essential chips our customers, partners and industry rely on,” said Adam Noah, Chief IP Counsel at GF. “By joining the LOT Network, we are further safeguarding our business and our customers against PAE litigation, allowing us to focus on the important work of delivering world-class technology solutions. We encourage others within the semiconductor manufacturing and design ecosystem to address the PAE drain on resources by joining LOT’s protective community, which provides strength in numbers.”
GF’s move is a significant step for the semiconductor industry, as all GF products now come with free immunization against over 20% of all U.S. patents within the LOT Network.
Leading by Example
“GF is the perfect role model for a U.S.-based semiconductor supplier,” said Ken Seddon, CEO of LOT Network. “Not only are they protecting their business, but they are also protecting their customers, as all GF products now come with free immunization to over 20 percent of all US patents. GF is a semiconductor visionary for recognizing the critical role it plays in the protection not just of the semiconductor industry, but the many verticals that rely upon its technologies as well.”
GF’s decision to join LOT Network underscores its leadership in protecting innovation and its dedication to fostering a secure and efficient technology ecosystem. By addressing the challenges posed by PAEs, GF is ensuring that its resources and energy remain focused on driving advancements in smarter, more connected devices.
