Micron Technology, Inc., a global semiconductor company specializing in memory and storage solutions, has announced plans to establish Micron Research Labs, a U.S.-based long-horizon research institution headquartered in Boise, Idaho, and backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade. The new research hub will focus on critical memory technologies, advanced memory and compute architectures, packaging and future semiconductor manufacturing.
Micron Research Labs is designed to bring together customers, academia, government, startups, industry and the broader semiconductor ecosystem to pursue breakthroughs beyond current technology roadmaps and advance future memory and computing technologies for the AI era. A flagship Boise campus will anchor the research initiative, which will also include extensive university collaborations, global satellite labs and ecosystem partnerships. The lab will connect Micron researchers with external experts and research partners and will draw on the company’s research and technology footprint across the U.S., Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Micron Research Labs will advance foundational research across memory, compute and semiconductor manufacturing and is designed to look beyond a 10-year technology horizon. The initiative builds on Micron’s 62,000 lifetime patents while also supporting development of the next generation of memory researchers and technology leaders. The company anticipates breaking ground on the new Boise research facility during calendar year 2027. The facility is expected to accommodate hundreds of researchers and host research conferences, workshops and innovation forums.

The planned $10 billion investment builds on Micron’s separately announced plans to invest more than $250 billion in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and research and development. Those broader investments are expected to create more than 90,000 American jobs.
