STMicroelectronics has introduced a new direct Time-of-Flight (dToF) 3D LiDAR module with up to 2.3k resolution. The VL53L9 is a low-power, ready-to-use module that integrates on-chip dToF processing. It features a dual-scan flood illumination design that enables detection of small objects and edges, along with the capture of 2D infrared images and 3D depth maps. Ranging capability extends from 5 cm to 10 meters, and no external calibration or components are required.
The sensor supports advanced camera-assist and photography functions, including laser autofocus, bokeh, and cinematic effects at up to 60 fps. Its performance characteristics make it suitable for spatial mapping, SLAM, and virtual reality systems where high-resolution edge detection is essential. Potential applications include immersive gaming, 3D avatars, and virtual environments.

STMicroelectronics has also released the VD55H1, an indirect ToF (iToF) sensor that is now in volume production. This sensor features a 672 x 804 resolution in a compact footprint and is optimized for use in webcams, VR headsets, people counting, and smart building systems. Its depth-mapping capabilities enable accurate 3D reconstruction across a range of embedded applications.
Lanxin Technology, via its MRDVS subsidiary, has selected the VD55H1 for its mobile robot deep vision systems. The integration of ST’s sensor supports intelligent obstacle avoidance and high-precision docking through the combination of 3D vision and edge AI.
Both sensors are manufactured using ST’s stacked-wafer technology with backside illumination. This architecture enables improved resolution and energy efficiency while reducing die size. According to ST, these enhancements help meet performance requirements for compact, high-accuracy devices in AI-enabled and mobile platforms.
Samples of the VL53L9 are available through ST’s global sales offices. Mass production is planned for early 2025. For more information, visit https://newsroom.st.com/media-center/press-item.html/p4608.html.
